Since its inception in 1875, SickKids has undergone many transformations: generating groundbreaking research, nutritional products for infants and children, pioneering life-saving paediatric surgeries and more. In 1892, SickKids graduated from six iron cots to 320 beds. Over 100 years later, in 2022, SickKids' current bed numbers remain close to this number despite massive accelerations in population growth, technology and standards of care. It’s time for our next transformation!
The redevelopment will result in the renewal or renovation of virtually all clinical care and support areas of the hospital.

The Hospital for Sick Children, or ‘SickKids’ as many people know it, is a beacon of hope for children and families across Canada and well beyond. Having recently been named the #1 children’s hospital in the world, it’s no secret that their level of care and expertise is unparalleled. And for many Canadian children requiring specialized care, SickKids isn't simply the best option—it's the only one.
SickKids sees nearly 400,000 patients from across Canada each year. They perform 100% of Ontario’s complex neonatal surgeries, over 50% of Canada’s bone marrow transplants, 60% of Canada’s complex heart surgeries and is the only place in Canada that corrects heart defects in babies before they’re born. From mending broken hearts to broken bones, SickKids is a home away from home for thousands of Canadian families.
But for all the amazing things this hospital can do, today they are facing their biggest battle against the limits of an old building, where families lack private spaces, ceiling heights can’t accommodate medical equipment and clinical spaces that are cramped, worn and inefficient. As their facilities deteriorate, and the demand for their services grows, we find ourselves in a once in a generation position, to help them build a hospital of the future.
A new SickKids will have room for families to be together and heal as one and weaved throughout, will have spaces that provide a sense of balance and calm that will allow kids to laugh and play and simply be kids. By investing in this world class institution, we’re investing in the future of our customers and partners, which in the end will create vibrant and thriving communities.
