More about the Optia Apheresis Machine:
Apheresis is the process of removing a specific portion of the blood and returning the remainder of the blood to the patient. SickKids is in need of another Optia Apheresis Machine. This device is used for plasmapheresis treatments for acute and chronic conditions and for the procurement of stem cells for bone marrow transplantation and other marrow treatments. There are about 415 apheresis treatments performed a year and they occur in a variety of clinical services including Nephrology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Liver and Lung Transplant, PICU and Neurology. Apheresis treatments are usually time-sensitive (stem cell collections, red cell exchange, plasmapheresis for acute conditions) and any equipment related limitations will directly impact patient care.
