WHAT WE'RE FIGHTING
Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissues. Under normal function, the immune system makes antibodies to protect and fight against antigens such as viruses and bacteria. Lupus makes the immune system unable to differentiate between antigens and healthy tissue; this results in symptoms such as inflammation, swelling and damage to joints, skin, kidneys, blood, heart, lungs, brain (causing cognitive disfunction) and other organs.
Lupus is a potentially fatal disease capable of damaging virtually any part of the body. In the most severe forms of this disease it can cause disfiguring rashes and scarring, miscarriages, kidney, heart and lung failure, strokes, seizures, and heart attacks.
In 2007 Pat Bayman was diagnosed with Lupus. Pat consistently perseveres through the pain and fatigue of her Lupus to volunteer her time to motorsports marshalling. We founded this event for her; to raise funds for a relentless, indiscriminate disease.
Every year we host an endurance race. Teams of a maximum of 4 drivers each, collect donations to determine their team's starting position for the race. The funds raised go directly to the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children Pediatric Lupus Clinic, where, each year, 60-70 new cases of Lupus are diagnosed in children and teens.
Over the past 13 years the Lupus Grand Prix has donated over $160,000 to the Clinic. The Hospital for Sick Children has recognized the contribution made by the Lupus Grand Prix with a plaque on their Donor Wall.
Register your team today and help us make it to $170,000!
